Portuguese M1904 - M1904/39 Sling
![]() |
I bought this sling at the Fall '01 Tulsa gunshow. The brass button is rather large, about 9/16" across. I was not sure what it went on. A fellow collector offered the following info:
What you have is an original issue sling for the Portuguese
M1904 &
M1904/39 Vergueiro Rifles....I have one such rifle and sling in my
collection....These were interesting rifles....They were made in Germany for
Portugal utilizing a Mauser style magazine and Mannlicher style split bridge
receiver and bolt assembly.....These were also chambered initially for a
unique 6.5x58 cartridge and then later rechambered for the 8x57 German Mauser
cartridge....As far as I know, Portugal was the only country to use these
rifles and it's 6.5x58 cartridge.....Whatever "colonies" Portugal
occupied
may have also used them but these were strictly Portuguese...Joe
