Mauser Leather Sling - Unknown

LEATHER UNKNOWNS

Sling donated by Mark Harris

Here are the opinions received on the above sling (from members of the Curio & Relic e-mail list)

German or Brazlian sling for M1898 style long rifle

It would fit the German 98 or clones (such as Czech 98/22). The QD rear
swivel allows repositionong the rear of the sling to an attachment point on
the front of the triggerguard, the "parade" position.

The leather looks like the sling I have on my M1912 Chilean rifle

My vote on the top sling is from a 1912 Chilean Mauser. I bought a sling
from Doug Bowser that also has a brass buckle and identical to yours,  it
was sold to me as 1912 chilean. Closest thing I found that looks correct on
my Gew88, but I don't think the WWI German Mausers or Gew88s had brass
buckles.

GEW 98 type sling

...thinking in terms of a Winchester Musket or Winchester Lee straightpull
sling

The leather sling looks a lot like the one on my 1908 Brazilian Mauser long
rifle. Mine does not have the flap and is narrower in width where the sling
button connects.

I have just received my Czech M1922 and its detachable sling swivel is exactly like the one pictured, although it may not belong to this specific piece of leather! As far as type of metal used for hardware I think one must realize that production prudence would guide the manufacturer as to what materials would be used for slings especiaslly during a conflict period. My vote goes to it being German WW1 period to pre 30's.Thanks for the op to add!
