Krag Sling

LEATHER VARIANT

This rifle sling, the Model 1887 Leather Sling, will fit either the 45-70 Springfield or 30-40 Krag. As seen in the photo this sling is in very good condition with only minor surface flaking. Upon close inspection one can see that oils nor leather preservatives have darkened the white linen thread used on the sling and keepers. This leads one to believe that this sling had never been issued. The leather is very pliable and not 'stretched out'.

Original Mills Tropical Web Sling for the U.S. Springfield Krag Jorgensen Rifle (see The Krag Rifle by William S. Brophy, page 55). Marked "Pat. Mills & Orndorff" with patent dates of 1889, 1893 and 1894. While the Krag was in use in Cuba and the Phillippines it became obvious that the Model 1887 leather sling was not suited for hot tropical climates. The leather would grow mold and eventually rot. To solve this problem, the U.S. Army procured a small quantity of the web sling that was offered by Mills of Worcester, Mass. Today these original slings are hard to find.
