Finn "Rawhide" Sling

Pictures and information courtesy of  John Giles

This is an unusual sling.  It's webbing trimmed with rawhide (some hair remains on the rawhide).  Would fit on a number of captured Soviet weapons of the WWI - WWI era.

Addtional information added by Marcus A. von Weigert, July 26, 2001

This is actually a Russian WW2 emergency pattern sling, used on the Mosin M38 and M44 carbines, and I am told, also on the PPSH type submachineguns.  Like any piece of Russian equipment, these may have been captured and used by the Finns, but it isn't a Finnish manufactured item. These slings are found on many Mosin carbines that were captured and brought back from Korea and Viet Nam, and also  were used by the Russians with many of the German Kar 98K rifles that they captured and refurbished after the war.  When most of these reworked K 98Ks were imported a few years ago, many came with one of these slings, a well-used original German WW2  3 pocket ammo pouch, and a Russian cleaning kit.

This sling is marked with the Finn Army SA stamp and is made of green web.  It would be correct for any rifle used in the Continuation War
